natural park and biosphere reserve
Sierra de las Nieves is a National Park, declared in 2021, and a Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve, declared in 1989 and 2005 respectively. It is one of the most unique natural areas in southern Spain due to its mountainous terrain, karst formations, and the presence of the world’s largest Spanish fir forests, an exceptional and rare relict fir species endemic to the western Mediterranean.
It stands out for its extraordinary biological and landscape diversity, where different Mediterranean ecosystems coexist, such as holm oak, cork oak, gall oak, and pine forests, along with the characteristic Spanish fir forests. These ecosystems blend together in the surrounding area and contrast with olive, almond, and fruit orchards, including cherry, avocado, and orange trees.
The park is home to a rich fauna, with emblematic species such as the mountain goat, the griffon vulture, Bonelli’s eagle, the golden eagle, as well as mammals such as the genet, the pine marten or the otter, and has an extensive network of trails and public facilities that allow you to enjoy nature and ecotourism activities such as hiking, landscape interpretation or wildlife observation.
In this park you can admire some wonderful landscapes, ravines and water sources. And finally, in July 2021 it has been declared a National Park.
